Best Time to Visit

Dry Seasons (Best Overall)

June to September: This is the peak season for wildlife viewing and gorilla trekking. Trails in Bwindi and other parks are less muddy, making the trekking experience more manageable. Wildlife congregates around water sources, improving visibility in savannah parks like Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. December to February: The second dry period offers excellent conditions for hiking and game drives. The weather is typically warm and sunny, though this is also a popular time for families and honeymooners.

Wet Seasons

March to May: This is the long rainy season. While roads can become difficult to navigate and trekking is more challenging due to mud, this period is ideal for birdwatchers. Over 1,000 species, including many migratory birds, are present. The landscape is lush and green, and you will encounter fewer tourists. October to November: The short rains occur during this period. Conditions are similar to the long rains but often less intense, with occasional showers followed by sunshine.

Gorilla Trekking Specifics

For mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, any time of year is suitable, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are preferred. During the wet seasons, the forest floor becomes slippery, and the hike can be more strenuous, though the forest is vibrant and the crowds are thinner.
